  • Though the first actual helicopter wasn’t built until the 1940s, it is believed that Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches from the late fifteenth century were the predecessor to the modern day helicopter. As with many of da Vinci’s ideas, he never actually built and tested it – but his notes and drawings mapped out exactly how the device would operate.

  • Leonardo da Vinci is sometimes called the Renaissance Man because of somethings in his sketches and other things.
  • Leonardo always wrote in his sketchbooks backwards. He even wrote each letter backwards! This is called mirror writing. He did this so only people smart enough to know what he did could read his journal.
  • Leonardo also studied anatomy. Leonardo dug up dead bodies from graveyards to study. He drew detailed diagrams in his sketches.

  • Leonardo was most famous for his artwork. Leonardo started a lot of projects, but most of them were never finished.
  • Leonardo da Vinci also came up with designs for a military tank and drew them in his sketchbooks.
